What actually happened was that Felix Marcus Superator went missing, moments before his death while engaged in combat during what we now know as the battle of the Teutoburg forrest. In his last dying momentd he saw his life flash before his eyes: His wife Septima, their sons Lucius and Caelus and a vision of Ares. Wait, what?
Ares appeared before him, not wanting to let such a great warrior go to waste. But instead of empowering him to keep fighting, he sent him far, far away where these Barbarisns couldn't hurt him.
