"Albert" at some point had a surname, in a past life. Whatever that surname was, under it he must have performed such heinous and unforgivable acts, that driven by repentance on his resurrection in the caves he decided to put himself under a strict regime of suffering under a vow of silence, for he considers to not have a right to even emit the slightlest whimper or complaint about his situation.
In order to ensure this, Albert underwent a hardy process to ensure his throat does not emit even the faintest sound through a process that almost kills him on the process, as he drank boiling water, cut off his tongue and sew his own lips, before enclosing his face permanently under an iron mask tied up to his face through leather belts.
The new Albert now lives in a hell of his own creation, of silence and constant suffering, as his face has not seen the light of the sun since the dire days when he still walked along his criminal cohort. However, he basks in this suffering as a neccesary step on the atonement that he direly needs, for may he be at some point forgiven for the sins he commited in another life, as he now rigidly follows the core commandments of the Orthidist church. (Sin limit: 10 commandments adherance)
