With her mother dead, Sain is raised by her abusive and controlling father in order to become a debutante and attend the Steeplechase Ball in Fort Worth, Texas. At the age of 12, she climbs out her bedroom window and runs away from home with assistance from a man known as Coyote. He soon becomes a way-ward father-figure of sorts and together they roam the deserts of rural Texas for several years until Sain returns to collect her deceased mother's inheritance. Upon arriving, she discovers her father has remarried and sired a new child to whom he is equally as cruel and abusive as he had been to Sain in her earlier years. Seeking to protect her younger half-brother and avenge her own past, Sain shoots the mouth of the man who had nothing but cruel words and violent fists—effectively silencing him forever. However, Sain cannot outrun the horrors of her violent past and thus becomes a Contractor in hopes of saving other children, and perhaps, in some way, herself.
