Salem, 1600s. Ophelia had been well respected in her day as a cherished member of society, a woman whose wisdom and beauty touched the heart of every person she encountered. Blessed with an intense sensitivity to the divine, she was honoured as healer and teacher both, admired for her remarkable capacity to speak with both the divine and the mystical. She spent her life serving others, nursing the ill, and counselling individuals overcome with grief. She never wavered in her belief in the divine and always acted with compassion and love for her fellow humans. A true saint.
All good things did not last however. Fear will always be a part of humanity, and whispers of witchcraft quickly spread across the land. Those who once honoured Ophelia for her wisdom grew to distrust and fear her. Having no comprehension of her abilities, they declared her a witch, a menace to their god and a heathen. The betrayal was orchestrated from a place she least expected: her immediate family. Ripped apart by fear and the need to safeguard the family name, they accused her, handing her over to authorities while accusing her of dark magic. Though she was their blood, all they could see was a threat, and they were afraid of the power she possessed. Ophelia pleaded for mercy, her life torn apart from those she trusted most.
The following was incomprehensible. Ophelia, a woman who had led a life filled with devotion and selflessness, was to be crucified. She was nailed to a wooden cross, her palms hammered in by her very own brother, her body degraded and laid bare before the crowd. The crowd showered her with stones and taunts, crying out for her blood, for they regarded her as a "demon." Her body was allowed to rot for two days, ignored by all who ever cared for her. Ophelia's spirit recoiled not only at the physical pain but at the overwhelming betrayal by her most loved kin.
At that point, Ophelia's previously fragmented spirit completely disintegrated.
She cried out for a miracle in her final breaths, that if she had the ability to turn back the sun, she would reshape this world into one where this sort of tragedy could never befall innocents. She prayed to god for the power to undo the cruelty she suffered, to stop the hate and fear that had engulfed her people. At the end of her life, when the flames began to engulf her physical body, she saw her mother smiling, pleased that her wicked daughter had finally been obliterated.
Ophelia's death was not the end, however. Her spirit did not falter. Her faith, her devotion, and her profound suffering wrought a revival. Through the divine mercy upon which she had always depended, Ophelia was restored to life, 400 years later. She would never be the same woman, she came back with an unholy blaze in her heart, a burning passion for revenge against those who had betrayed her. With an unstoppable motivation to create a world in which no such tragedy could ever again occur, where no flames could reach the innocent. There are memories, deep and profound memories ingrained in her soul.
