Legendary Artifact

Red veil of the Đạo Mẫu

Created and held by Freddy Newman.

Freddy wears it around his neck like a bandana and he can pull it up to cover his face.

Using the ability of the veil makes the voice sound a bit distorted but still easily understood. The veil emits a soothing warmth reminiscent of a warm hug filled with love while the user talks.

While being deployed in Vietnam, Gladys Newman was send ahead of her squad in a reconnaissance to scout out the exact location of the enemy camp harboring prisoners of war.

While on her way to the lookout spot she crashed through old wooden boards covering the entrance to an old forgotten Vietnamese grace site. The stone cave was filled with strange symbols carved into the stone , with the only other thing of notice being a stone pedestal with a red veil on it. Gladys felt the veil almost calling her to pick it up. Falling to temptation Gladys decided to pick up the veil uncovering a horrific site to behold. The thing that was being covered by the veil was a head that was cut off long ago.

Once she had the red veil in her possession she noticed something change. She was able to understand the text carved into stone walls. A part of them were prayers to the mother goddess , another part of them were protection spells trying to protect the grave site from evil spirits and the last part regarding the previous owner of the red veil , the shaman giao. That must have been the person whose skull was underneath the veil.

With the veil in her possession Gladys decided to climb out of the gave site and go on with her mission. After a couple of hours she was able to locate the enemy’s location. She got a close as possible to a building that seemed to have been the cabin of the officer in charge. Inside of the cabin were the officer and the captains discussing their plan of operation. To her surprise she was able to perfectly understand the words they’ve said without having spoken a single word of Vietnamese her whole life. It must have been because of the veil she carried with her!

Listening closely to every word spoken Gladys uncovered that the camp was actually a decoy leading into an ambush which would lead to a high amount of casualties on the Americans sides. The location where the p.o.w. were relocated to was also one of the topics . Hearing this Gladys headed back to her squad and reported her findings to her sergeant, only leaving out the part about the red veil and its ability’s.

Her discovery led to the US Army being able to take out the decoy camp with minimal soldier casualties and also able to rescue the p.o.w.’s from their actual prison. She got a Purple Heart for all of her troubles and the war continued as if nothing happened.

Years later Gladys found the veil in a chest containing all of her old equipment from the war. She knew of the possibility’s such an artifact could bring but she decided against using it herself and gave it to her son Freddy knowing that he would use it to make the world a better place.

She still sometimes gets letters from some of the p.o.w.’s telling her about their life and thanking her for the service she did.

Community Artifacts

Chain of Hauri

Created and held by Liv.
A small bronze chain that fits around a wrist. Skin contact will reveal it is so lightly warm, and gives and uneasy feeling.

The artifact holds at least one demon bound to obey the commands and will of the wielder and advance their interests. When used a demon crawl's its way out of the object, and leap out, looking for enemies.

The demon in this iteration looks like a small creature of shadow, about the proportions of a human 10-year-old, but stretched upwards to be thin and lanky with dark scales, blank white eyes, clawed fingers and thin leathery wings. When firing at range, they shoot dark blades that dissipate after impact.

The demon can speak, reporting on anything it sees, and apply a level of intelligence to understanding the world around it.

This artifact is made by summoning a demon, making a deal with it, and binding it to the object in a long ritual.

  2. A Major Battle Scar E.g. a disabled/removed hand or foot, an inability to speak, an impacted major sense, removal of a minor sense, impacted movement.
  3. A Severe Battle Scar E.g. a disabled/removed arm or leg, deafness, aesthetic changes that are nearly impossible to conceal.
  4. An Extreme Battle Scar E.g. removal/disabling both hands or both legs, blindness, a full-body deformation that leaves the target humanoid but makes it difficult to use clothes, vehicles, and equipment designed for humans.
Refer to the stock Battle Scars on the Character Sheet for specific systems.

This Effect activates whenever you are recorded. It does not require an Action or Exertion. Select a Non-Sapient Object within 20 feet no larger than a duffel bag (35 liters). Your target should be intuitively based on the triggering event. Roll Perception + Culture Difficulty 6.

If your Outcome is 4 or higher, the target will be completely destroyed and can no longer function, though it may still be repaired. If your Outcome is less than 4, the target will be partially damaged, and any attempts to use it will suffer a dice penalty equal to your Outcome.

  • When triggered, the Effect activation resolves immediately after the triggering Action. It is not Reaction speed.
  • The penalty from an object being damaged will stack with itself if a target is hit multiple times, but the object is destroyed when it reaches a total penalty of -4.
  • You can target yourself if you qualify as a valid target by the other requirements.
  • Your target must be within line of sight, or within range of another sense if more fitting for the Gift's flavor.

255TE "Lancer" Rife

A metallic disk that, with the press of a button, expands into a futuristic-looking rifle.

This Artifact can be used as a rifle. It is roughly the same size as a rifle but can be collapsed into a metallic disk and concealed. Collapsing or expanding it costs a Quick Action.

Attack by rolling Dexterity + Firearms, Difficulty 6. Successful attacks deal Contested Outcome +5 Weapon Damage.

You also gain the following effects:

  • Silencer: The report of any shots you fire may be made silent at will.

  • If there is not enough free space to expand the object, it cannot be expanded. You cannot expand this Object as an attack.
  • Reminder: additional Weapon Damage granted by this Effect does not stack with any other bonus to Weapon Damage. Instead the largest bonus is used.
  • Rifles are +1 Difficulty to use in melee range. Sniper Rifles are +3 Difficulty to use without a tripod or in melee range. Setting up a tripod takes an Action.

You gain the following benefits as long as you are wearing this Artifact.

You have 6 Armor, which reduces incoming Damage. Armor from multiple sources does not stack.

Your Armor cannot be destroyed, and it always provides a minimum of 2 Armor regardless of any Armor shredding or penetration. It cannot be circumvented with Called Shots. When shredded, it returns to full potency in one hour.

Any time your Armor prevents Damage, your Armor rating is temporarily decreased by 2. Whenever it goes five Rounds without preventing any Damage, it is restored back to its full value.

  • Armor recharging happens automatically and does not require an Action.
  • This Effect’s Armor rating cannot be increased by any other Effects.

The Skeleton Key

At first glance, this appears to be a standard, modern house key made of ivory. A close observer might compliment its skull-shaped head or usual material. No one would suspect it to be one of the Thief's most prized possessions: The Skeleton Key.

Spend an Action.

You may lock, unlock, and/or open any number of doors, containers, knots, or locks within arm's reach of you. Cannot be used on Alien technology.

If you successfully operate a lock, you may choose to destroy it, rendering it inoperable.

  • Operating some locking mechanisms through this Effect may have a secondary effect, such as a turn-key ignition on an older or cheaper car causing it to start or stop. Note that the locking mechanism itself must satisfy the standard targeting requirements (including line of sight), not just the vehicle.
  • Any mechanism that requires a key, keycard, key fob, or combination may be considered locked, at the GM's discretion. This Effect may be used on doors and containers secured with control panels or other electronic locks, but not computer security systems at large.
  • You can target yourself if you qualify as a valid target by the other requirements.
  • Your target must be within line of sight, or within range of another sense if more fitting for the Gift's flavor.

This Effect activates whenever you are submerged in salt water. It does not require an Action or Exertion. Your target should be intuitively based on the triggering event.

You transform into small for two hours or until you choose to end the Effect. See the Extended System text for stats.

While transformed, you cannot use any equipment (including Artifacts and Consumables), and you cannot use your Active, Targeted, or Trap Powers. However, you can use your Passive Powers. Any equipment you are wearing transforms with you.

Injuries and Wound Level are carried over between forms. However, transforming can never kill you; you merely remain Incapacitated until your Injuries are sufficiently healed.

  • When triggered, the Effect activation resolves immediately after the triggering Action. It is not Reaction speed.
  • Creature Stats
    • Medium (large house cat up to human) Body 3. Brawn 1. Dexterity 3. Fall damage reduced by 1.
All creatures get +3 dice to any non-combat Action that they are naturally adapted for. All creatures Medium and larger may attack by rolling Body, dealing +0 Damage (+1 for “predators”). Gms and Playgroup leaders can apply other bonuses and effects to specific animals.
  • Animals that are quicker than humans (like dogs) have 50 feet of Free Movement. Animals that are very slow (like turtles) have 0 feet of Free Movement.
  • You cannot transform if there is not enough room to do so.
  • The form you take must have the same stats and abilities as a single, extant animal of the relevant size.
