Legendary Artifact

The Inari Charm

Created and held by Leon Vanderblight.
A black inari charm with white accents around the eyes, and a singular red line drawn down it's muzzle from the mouth.

Leon has decided that it is time to stop merely playing at divinity and begin embodying it. The first step in doing so is to honor one of the most ancient traditions of Kami. Naorai, the end of the period of fasting and moderation wherein the gods pay the believer back for their devotion. In doing so Leon enjoys a meal in a blessed location as the kami responsible for the people in his land at a sanctified location, during which time he accumulates the energy of faith shared in the meal into a bottle of sake that he keeps beside him throughout the meal. Then, at the end once the bottle has filled with the energy and the sake has been enriched with the spiritual power of both Kami and believer, Leon then takes a drink of sake and bites his tongue before he spits the mixture onto the object in question and in doing so blesses it granting it the power of the kami that aid him in his day to day life and cleansing it of impurities with his own life essence. In this communion as well, two items may be brought into union as god and believer are and in doing so elevate both to something beyond either.

Exert your Mind and spend an hour. Select a Device within arm's reach. Can be used on Alien technology. This Effect cannot be used unless Can only be used during a meal with another consenting sapient being and Must be performed in a holy site. Can be used on Armor.

Lasts the next day. Your target receives 3 extra dice to all actions taken for its intended use. Attacking with an upgraded weapon grants +3 Weapon Damage instead of additional dice. While it is upgraded, the item cannot be destroyed. Upgraded Armor is shredded by half the normal amount. If it is a piece of Armor, it instead receives half that amount as bonus armor rating, rounded up. If an upgraded shield and armor are both worn, the upgrade bonus does not stack with itself.

You may choose a second valid Device target while activating this Effect and splice both targets into a single new Device. The newly created item has the same size as the larger of the two initial targets, and can be used to perform the same actions as either of the original items. It receives 3 to those actions for the next day.

After you finish activating this Effect, you cannot move quicker than a walk (max 15 feet per Round) for one minute and suffer a -1 dice penalty for an hour. Exhaustion’s penalty and duration stacks with multiple activations.

  • Upgrading Alien Devices does not add bonus dice to any rolls related to the Device’s passive or activated Effects.
  • "Destroyed" in this context means "prevented from functioning for its primary purpose", so for instance, an upgraded land mine would still explode as normal if triggered, even though it cannot be "destroyed" and a car's windows may still be broken.
  • When Splicing, you must be in possession of both devices. The resulting object behaves exactly as if both devices occupy the same space and do not gain any new functionality at all.
  • Exhaustion penalties and duration stack. If you activate this Effect or another Effect with Exhaustion, your penalty will worsen, and the duration is increased by one hour.
  • Reminder: additional Weapon Damage granted by this Effect does not stack with any other bonus to Weapon Damage. Instead the largest bonus is used. The same is true for extra dice.
  • Extra dice from this Effect do not apply to Gift activation rolls.
  • You can target yourself if you qualify as a valid target by the other requirements.
  • Your target must be within line of sight, or within range of another sense if more fitting for the Gift's flavor.

The small charm opens its mouth to reveal rows of sharp, broken, wooden teeth as it snaps hungrily at the nearest extremity as it exclaims "Feed me!" and attempts to satiate its unending hunger for blood. For those willing to part with some of their vital essences willingly though will find that it comes with its boons. Once the spirit is temporarily satiated it can use its power to call upon the nature spirits in the area. The Kodama that answers its call are far more helpful than the spirit within the charm and will answer questions about the area to the best of their ability. Though their specialty lies in the knowledge of the supernatural, and the threats that they have to avoid within the area they can answer specific questions if asked and will usually render the answer out in the form of a minute-long play.

Exert your Mind and spend a minute. Investigate an area with a radius of up to 1 mile You must make a Trauma roll when you use this Effect. Its Difficulty cannot be reduced by any means. If you fail or Botch, you receive one Mind Damage and a new Trauma. At the end of your investigation, roll Charisma + Performance at Difficulty 6.

You learn the following information about the area:

  • You can locate the source of any Alien energy or the presence of any Alien effects on the area. Specific information about the function of these effects beyond their general type is not forthcoming.
  • You choose a specific type of event and receive a vision of the last time it occurred here.
  • You learn how heavily trafficked the area is, what sorts of Animate beings have moved through the area and when.
The quality and specificity of information gained depends on your Outcome.

You cannot investigate the same area more than once per day.

  • You can target yourself if you qualify as a valid target by the other requirements.
  • Your target must be within line of sight, or within range of another sense if more fitting for the Gift's flavor.

Biting his tongue and then smearing the blood across the chords of the musical instrument, Leon plays the blood soaked strings to evoke a melody that resonates within the essence of the universe. Calling to it's distant will, and in doing so imparting a tangible level of power Leon is incapable of on his own. This essence binds itself to Leon's magic, and then flows into his illusions granting physical form to his illusions.

The art of illusions. To control the senses and manifest something that appears to be real, or to warp the world to create the facsimile of something real. What difference is there truly in such a act from creating? The answers lies in that it is only the degree to which one is able to enforce their will. In divinity, the power to do such becomes more evident every day, and now Leon's illusions are no longer merely as such so long as he is willing to commit his essence to it's creation. Though Leon can't help but ask as he becomes more in tune with this, is this truly what it feels to be divine? Because so much of this seems alien and not of himself.

Exert your Mind (unless you are Sculpting) and spend one minute. Select a Location within arm's reach. This Effect cannot be used unless The illusion that is becoming a material must be made into an exact replica of the illusion. You must be in an area abundant with Illusions. You must make a Trauma roll when you use this Effect. Its Difficulty cannot be reduced by any means. If you fail or Botch, you receive one Mind Damage and a new Trauma.

Select one of the following alterations to create out of Illusions originating at the target:

  • Dome: Create a dome or other simple, enclosed structure made of Illusions up to 40 feet in radius, 24 feet high, and 24 inches thick.
  • Sculpt: Sculpt a surface made of Illusions up to 80 feet by 80 feet. You may make aesthetic changes or minor functional improvements like a ladder or stairs. You may sculpt windows, doors, and similar alterations into structures you created with this Effect.
  • Wall: Create a straight wall made of Illusions up to 80 feet long, 20 feet high, and 24 inches thick. This wall can also be used to create a bridge, ramp, or similar. It must be free-standing.

The alteration begins to form when you activate this Effect and finishes forming on your initiative in the next Round. Until it finishes forming, it is not guaranteed to function.

This alteration lasts indefinitely but may be prematurely destroyed or altered. Your alterations may be broken through with appropriate tools. Anyone attempting to break through must roll Brawn + a relevant Ability. A cumulative Outcome of 12 across all attempts breaks a hole large enough to move through. See the extended system text for GM guidance on various tools.

You may sculpt your walls, domes, or tunnels as you create them, without any additional activation time or cost.

  • Attempting to break any alterations with inappropriate tools may damage or destroy the tools at the GM's discretion.
  • Any structures you create leave precise gaps for obstacles in their path or push them out of the way. You cannot directly destroy objects or structures or damage beings by creating walls or domes.
  • Tool guidance for GMs:
    • Difficulty 9: Brawn 5, no tools.
    • Difficulty 7-8: One-handed tools or makeshift tools (like a sword). Mythic Brawn without tools.
    • Difficulty 6: Appropriate manual tools. Crowbar, sledgehammer, armor-shredding attacks.
    • Difficulty 4-5: Power tools, vehicles, explosives.
  • This Effect produces the substance you are controlling unless it is drawn from the environment via “Required Environment” Drawbacks.
  • You can target yourself if you qualify as a valid target by the other requirements.
  • Your target must be within line of sight, or within range of another sense if more fitting for the Gift's flavor.

You must actively and obviously be using up A katashiro. You must use this Artifact obviously when activating this Effect.
Leon lays down flat and begins to close his eyes. His mind drifted into the embrace of yet another spirit brought into his service through the Inari charm. The Takarabune. A spirit much like the Inari that was originally connected with Woe, and the portent of a negative future and is now associated with the seven lucky gods, and in emulating the ritual many commit to on New Years, Leon can be granted a vision by the spirit as he passes through. Though in doing so he must enter a partially lucid dreaming state, and his eyes become cloudy and distorted even as the yokai guides him towards the items of value that are typically portrayed within the boat, as well as to the rifts to the spirit realm that call it home to dock once it is loaded. In doing so, however, he is not able to stop the Inari Charm itself from draining him heavily, and sometimes the spirit drinks too greedily leaving Leon more wounded than helped.

Exert your Mind and spend two Actions performing the following ritual: Leon must lay down fully and place the artifact under his head as he clasps the artifact between his hands and attempts to enter a lucid dreaming state for even just a moment.. You must maintain Concentration while activating this Effect, and it fails if you are interrupted. You must make a Trauma roll when you use this Effect. Its Difficulty cannot be reduced by any means. If you fail or Botch, you receive one Mind Damage and a new Trauma.

You automatically detect all Mystical Objects and Spatial Disturbances (Portals, people's effect on the world when they teleport, spirit realm rifts, etc) within 10 miles of you for the next hour. You have a clear sense of both the distance and direction towards any detected items. When you detect objects, instead of learning nothing about them, you may observe each object with all of your senses.

The means by which any Mystical Objects and Spatial Disturbances (Portals, people's effect on the world when they teleport, spirit realm rifts, etc) are hidden or disguised is made clear to you, as well as how to access them if they are secured. This includes objects secured via the Stash Effect.

After this Effect ends, you cannot move quicker than a walk (15 feet per Round) for one minute and suffer a -1 dice penalty for an hour.

You may only use this Effect once per day.

  • This includes any objects that come into range during activation.
  • This Effect does not satisfy the line of sight targeting requirement for other Effects.

You may send a single message to all targets which are within a specified range. It can be no more complicated than a multi-page letter or a long email.

You must share a common language for your target to understand the message.

This Gift cannot have more than 3 Drawbacks, and its Gift Cost is capped at 1.

  • Receiving a message does not force a target to pay attention to you, and they can feel free to ignore your message if they choose. Depending on the flavor of your Gift, they may or may not be able to return to it and read it later on.
  • Generally you cannot communicate with Contractors who are not in a Contract with you.

  • Not Quite Flying: You may Exert your Mind and use up your Movement to “follow” any attack using this weapon, traveling right next to its point of impact.

  • Created projectiles last only until they strike their target and cannot be shared or stockpiled.
  • The attack must be the primary form of attack for this weapon.
  • Reminder: additional Weapon Damage granted by this Effect does not stack with any other bonus to Weapon Damage. Instead the largest bonus is used.

Sable's Stuffed Animal

Created and held by Sable.
a dirty cat stuffed animal, with frayed fur and button eyes

Sable hugs her toy close to her chest, their heart beats aligning as the stuffed animal morphs into a terrifying cat-like creature (a kot bayun). The once still button eyes are now black beads of malice, and its claws pierce like iron blades. The creature hums melodically, but quietly, as it protects its owner.

(her name is Chamomile)

This Effect activates whenever Sable suffers a Severity 2 or higher injury. It does not require an Action or Exertion. Your target should be intuitively based on the triggering event.

Summon the one and only Sapient Kot Bayun at your location. They last for two hours or until they are destroyed. They are controlled by you. This Artifact may have at most one active at a time.

  • Initiative: Minions act directly after you in Combat starting the Round after they are summoned.
  • Combat: Minions roll 5 dice to dodge, Grapple, or make claws Attacks. Their unarmed Attacks are melee range and deal +2 Damage.

  • Intelligence: Minions have human-level intelligence and can speak your language. They lack manual dexterity and cannot use equipment, Artifacts, or Consumables designed for humans.
  • Actions: Any Perception checks they make are rolled with 4 dice. If ordered to protect someone with its life, your Minion may sacrifice itself to absorb an Attack on their behalf, provided it is within 15 feet of them. Your minion is able to Stealth with a 8 dice pool. Any other roll is made with 4 dice. They can lift and haul as though they have 2 Brawn.
  • Powers: Your companion can Exert their Mind using your Mind and spend your Source.
  • Unusual: Minions are obviously Alien to any observer.

If killed, you cannot re-summon your minion until after your next Contract.

  • Your companion heals fully during each Downtime, but is not healed fully when you re-summon them.
  • Your companion is affected normally by Artifacts and Energy Transfer.
  • When triggered, the Effect activation resolves immediately after the triggering Action. It is not Reaction speed.
  • Your minions may count as additional targeting types based on their flavor. For example: Living, Computer, Creature, etc.

Sable cradles the Chamomile plushie in her arms, gently rocking back and forth as a soft, gentle lullaby echoes around all who are near. A motherly voice begins to sing, seemingly coming from nowhere, and the beautiful melody lures them into slumber. Those unaffected can sometimes see a beautiful ghostly woman standing behind Sable, hands resting on her shoulders as she sings and gazes down at the child.

Expend a point of Battery and spend an Action. Select a Living target within 30 feet. Roll Perception + Occult at Difficulty 6. Affected targets may resist by rolling Mind at Difficulty 6.

If you succeed, your target becomes drowsy for the next 30 seconds, during which time they suffer an additional -2 dice Penalty to all Actions. At the end of their drowsiness, they fall asleep for Contested Outcome x 3 minutes.

Sleeping targets will not prematurely wake up on their own, but may still be woken up by sudden loud noises, being jarred or splashed with water, taking Damage, or similar rousing events. They will also awaken before dying of hunger, thirst, or suffocation. Drowsy targets always fall asleep, regardless of what happens while they are drowsy.

When an affected target wakes up, they remain drowsy for the next minute, and suffer a -3 dice penalty. If an affected target successfully resists being put to sleep, they will still become drowsy for the next minute, and will suffer the same penalty.

You may end this Effect prematurely as a Free Action.

Anyone who touches this Artifact will notice it warping their mind and may drop it. If they choose to hold or use it, they immediately receive the following Trauma: Nightmares. If they lose possession of this Artifact, the Trauma heals over the course of the next day.

  • For targets where "sleep" does not make any sense in terms of flavor, they will power down, freeze, etc, whatever state they can be in which is analogous to sleep.
  • You can target yourself if you qualify as a valid target by the other requirements.
  • Your target must be within line of sight, or within range of another sense if more fitting for the Gift's flavor.

No matter how difficult times get, you can always rely on a soft, gentle hug from good ol' Chamomile. Holding and talking to the stuffed animal gives you a warm, fuzzy feeling inside.

Expend a point of Battery to activate. Select a Living target within arm's reach. Over the course of one day, your patient must communicate with you and reveal at least one of their Traumas to you, including the details of those Traumas and the circumstances of how they were acquired. After the full treatment time has elapsed, roll Charisma + Alertness at Difficulty 6.

Your target may Resist. If your treatment is successful, you may remove one of the patient's revealed Traumas without incurring any Experience cost.

  • The treatment time may be broken up into multiple sessions if necessary.
  • You can target yourself if you qualify as a valid target by the other requirements.
  • Your target must be within line of sight, or within range of another sense if more fitting for the Gift's flavor.

Gladius

Created and held by Reginald weevil.
Spear

"Wevill unroll the large tool from it's bandages, and retrieves an unusual weapon, some type of javelin adorned with strange twisted lines as they were resembling spines, and at it's tip, lied an intimidating skull of a sword fish, at normal distance, it actually looks if it were out of bones, but if you look closer it's was solid and sharp, made out of pure steel.

He pins the weapon to the ground, soon after several identical but translucent copies of the weapon take form around him.

This Artifact produces ephemeral projectiles that can be used as a javelin.

Attack by rolling Brawn + Athletics, Difficulty 6. Successful attacks deal Contested Outcome +3 Weapon Damage.

Anyone who touches this Artifact will notice it warping their mind and may drop it. If they choose to hold or use it, they immediately receive the following Trauma: fear of underwater. If they lose possession of this Artifact, the Trauma heals over the course of the next day.

You also gain the following effects:

  • Magic Quiver: Instead of throwing this Artifact, it is an object that produces an endless supply of temporary throwable objects. For example, bracers that allow you to throw ethereal javelins, or a sack of throwing rocks that doesn’t shrink when you withdraw one.
  • Not Quite Flying: You may Exert your Mind and use up your Movement to “follow” any attack using this weapon, traveling right next to its point of impact.
  • Ricochet: You can make a thrown attack against a target behind cover so long as there is at least one exposed pathway to them.

  • Created projectiles last only until they strike their target and cannot be shared or stockpiled.
  • The attack must be the primary form of attack for this weapon.
  • This Artifact cannot be disguised or morphed with other Effects like Shape-Changing object.
  • Reminder: additional Weapon Damage granted by this Effect does not stack with any other bonus to Weapon Damage. Instead the largest bonus is used.

Stock Legendary Artifacts

Increase your sacrificial Injury's Severity by 1 and spend one minute. Select a Dead target within arm's reach with at least half its skeletal structure remaining. You must make a Trauma roll when you use this Effect. Its Difficulty cannot be reduced by any means. If you fail or Botch, you receive one Mind Damage and a new Trauma.

Your target rises as an Animate being. The raised creature is totally mindless, with no memory of its past life or hint of its old personality. They cannot communicate. They will follow any command you speak.

The creature lasts for eight hours or until it dies again. It is revived at full health. Any Injuries it had in life are not accounted for when determining its penalties or progression towards re-death, though they may affect its ability to perform certain actions at GM's discretion.

Raised creatures have their Abilities set to the same that they were in life. Their Charisma and Intellect are set to 1, but their Dexterity, Brawn and Perception are the same as they had in life. A raised creature cannot use any Effects.

Destroying one of your zombies requires a called shot to the head or heart. All other Injuries zombies suffer result in Battle Scars only, limiting their mobility and effectiveness in other ways.

Your revived targets deal 2 Weapon Damage with their unarmed attacks.

If you do not have a sacrificial Injury when you activate this Effect, take a new Severity-1 Injury.

  • The called shot requires 4 Outcome dealing 4+ Damage or 6 Outcome dealing 2+ Damage.
  • The sacrificial Injury received from activating this Effect cannot be prevented by any means or healed before 1 day has passed. It is shared with all Effects that use sacrifice. This Injury does not requires Stabilization or cause Battle Scars when it becomes Severe.
  • You can target yourself if you qualify as a valid target by the other requirements.
  • Your target must be within line of sight, or within range of another sense if more fitting for the Gift's flavor.

The Skeleton Key

At first glance, this appears to be a standard, modern house key made of ivory. A close observer might compliment its skull-shaped head or usual material. No one would suspect it to be one of the Thief's most prized possessions: The Skeleton Key.

Spend an Action.

You may lock, unlock, and/or open any number of doors, containers, knots, or locks within arm's reach of you. Cannot be used on Alien technology.

If you successfully operate a lock, you may choose to destroy it, rendering it inoperable.

  • Operating some locking mechanisms through this Effect may have a secondary effect, such as a turn-key ignition on an older or cheaper car causing it to start or stop. Note that the locking mechanism itself must satisfy the standard targeting requirements (including line of sight), not just the vehicle.
  • Any mechanism that requires a key, keycard, key fob, or combination may be considered locked, at the GM's discretion. This Effect may be used on doors and containers secured with control panels or other electronic locks, but not computer security systems at large.
  • You can target yourself if you qualify as a valid target by the other requirements.
  • Your target must be within line of sight, or within range of another sense if more fitting for the Gift's flavor.

This Artifact can change its appearance. When not transformed, it is roughly the same size as a passport and just as difficult to conceal.

Exert your Mind and spend an Action to activate. This Artifact changes its appearance into an Object within the category of forms of identification. This lasts until you decide to end the Effect, which may be done as a Free Action.

The new object's appearance can mimic specific items (such as a particular painting, a certain person’s ID, etc), but must be of a similar size and weight to this Artifact.

The new appearance is illusory; it will hold up to scrutiny, but its composition is not altered and it gains no new functionality. Any attempt to use it for a function which it cannot perform (for instance, making bread look like a knife and then trying to stab someone) will cause the illusion to fail or allow a Perception check to see through the illusion, at the GM's discretion.

Expend a point of Battery and spend an Action.

You automatically detect all people wielding weapons within 300 feet of you for the next hour. This includes any who come within range during the duration. You have a sense of how many valid targets are nearby, as well as their distance and direction.

  • This Effect does not satisfy the line of sight targeting requirement for other Effects.

Personal Shield Generator

The device itself is a metal hexagon that is worn on the belt and glows when active.

Expend a point of Battery and spend an Action or Reaction.

You phase out of reality for up to 4 Rounds. During this time, you cannot perceive or affect the outside world or take any Actions. You cannot move. Nothing can interact with you in any way.

When you activate this Effect, you may limit its duration to a period of your choosing. If you are able, you may also end it as a Free Action on your initiative.

You leave a golden glow shaped like yourself at your location.

  • If you use this Effect to dodge as a Reaction, it succeeds without the need for a roll. Cannot be used as a Desperate Defense.
  • You may use your Free Movement on the Round you phase back in, but you cannot take an Action.
