A well-preserved leather-bound journal only an inch thick. Its corners are rounded, the spine bound together with a twisting and braided thread layered twice over. When held, it feels weighted with more than it seems, the pages pressed tight together by the attached strap wrapped around it, the end slipped through a split on the front fashions to make it seem like the embossed bird is holding it tight with their beak.
The embossed design of the crow is sharp, the leather between each line soft to the touch like genuine feathers. The beak is hard as talons, and its single seen eye seems to peer into you who examines it. The little bird sits calmly on a branch embossed at the base of the journal cover, steadfast in its duty to secure the wrap that holds it closed.
Elegant and perfectly legible in the space above, the little bird reads an inscription that shifts effortlessly from its genuinely carved letters on the leather's surface to words you can read:
Whomever so opens this or even so perceives its knowledge
without consent
shall suffer a fruitless bed or a blinded eye;
this is a promise of both one living or dead.
When you pull at the strap, the crow tugs against you, and when you pull the strap free, it seems the screech out in silence before stilling in that state-its, feathers clearly ruffled and mouth agape.
The message in the space above shifts suddenly: A promise made is a promise kept.
After the written passages, the pages turn endlessly, the weight in your hand never changing.
When you are finished reading, you close the book, but the crow is no longer on its cover.
While the Cooper Will was found, if I read the news correctly, it is heavily contested by Ms. Millie Cooper and her ilk.
Alwin and her friend, whom I still have singed relations with, seem alright despite it.
I would be a fool to write of that day, seeing as Alwin and I have become better friends and acquaintances than expected. I will appear in some of her social media messages, keeping her story fresh and such as she puts it.
Despite her insistence, I will not be making any social media profiles. I prefer to continue my dealings in more private settings. While I don't mind appearing with her, considering our start as well, I don't see the appeal in seeking out those who will compliment you in such ways, but I am glad she finds joy in it. Unfortunately, the Cooper situation couldn't be settled outside human court, but I'm sure she'll sway a jury. Considering that Millie wasn't even aware of her father's love of Borneo and its nature and nature generally, Alwin won't have much trouble with it.
She can certainly throw a nice party, and I must admit she is pleasant to spend time with.
While I do not know the status of anyone else payment, I convinced Ms. Cooper that it would be in her best interest to pay what was owed to us for finding the will. At the minimum, she sent my payment through.
I've looked into the Borneo Nature Foundation myself and took the liberty to donate 95% of my earnings from what Millie Cooper paid to me for my participation in finding the will in Mr. Cooper's name. Considering the contentment of the will I doubt Mr. Cooper foresaw, I felt it was needed. He would have liked living in our realm more than his own, but I can't be sure. Alwin seems to think he would have preferred if humans had been forced into our space.
I received a call for new employment, so we'll see how that goes. Perhaps Phillip will be there again? An unlikely but pleasant surprise that would be.
