Downtime

On the run in the U.S. of A.

May walks for several days.

It is less cold here.

There are homeless shelters she can stay at sometimes.

But they have mirrors.  She avoids them as best she can, but reflections are everywhere.

She was shoving the second handful of shards down her throat when she noticed that it wasn’t tearing her up inside.

A fluid leaks from her lips. Green. It drips on the floor, and it deforms what it touches. Digesting.

She thinks on this as she shoved the rest of the mirror down her throat. That’s better. She is whole. Or at least less lacking.

She needs to run. They’ll find her here with a shattered mirror and there will be a story.

With focus, May finds she can make the fluid leak from her hands. Throwing it at the wall digests it, weakening it enough that she can claw her way out, then climb down the building.

She runs.

———

Robbing stores is easier now. Doors and walls can stop her. She gets in through a side wall late at night, and takes what she needs.

A hand in need

May packs her hand in snow.

This is not the first time she remembers missing a hand. The memories of that pain, and that debilitation are common in her memories. She looks down at her stump.

This will make hunting her progenitor harder. She takes a shotgun. She takes some clothes to replace her old and burned clothes.

The shotgun be hard to use without her other hand.

---

She burns her hand. Didn't have enough snow to keep it. This should preserve it some. If she is lucky, she can

---

She feels the tingling after a few days on. She is hiding in an alley next to a grocery. Waiting for dark so she can destroy enough of the vent and wall to get food for the next week.

She focuses. The stump of her arm changes. Then it grows, small tendrils growing and expanding. After a minute, she has a hand again.

May grins.... This... This has potential.

Downtime

Hunting down the progenitor.

May finds Captain Zero after the contract.

She has a very straightforward offer.

Help her kill April, and she would devote herself to his service.

Captain Zero offers some nonsense about taking over the world.

May just want to start with not dying.

Regardless. This got her a chance.

-------
It was cold. Dark.

It makes sense to go at night.

May has a full set of armor.

Ammo for bullets. She remembers using them in her old life. Her father trained her.

They arrive a ways away from the house.

May moves carefully.

In the dark.

The house is empty. Car gone. And the fuel gone.

She returns, shifts her skin into that of a large wolf.

Then returns to inspecting.

There is a track to the barn.

The smell of gas.

A trap.

She returns. She tells the captain. She redresses herself in her armor. Grabs a shotgun. The Captain grabs a sniper rifle, and sets himself up.

May heads back to the barn.

Mixes some alcohol into a makeshift molotov cocktail.

Then throws it.

The Barn lights.

There is a glint.

May dodges, The captain takes a shot at the progenitor. A ways a way with a rifle of her own.

May runs.

Chasing.

She chases. She shoots.

April has a snowmobile, but May shoots her off of it.

Then gets closer, and shoots her through the skull.

Then the urge comes. The emptyness.

She strips off her clothes, as her body changes.

And she devours her double.

Downtime

May recovers.

It takes weeks before May can get out of bed.

She finally gets used to the softness of the bed. The captain has good medical coverage. But her injuries heal fine. Even if Amy hadn't fixed it.

But she is drained. She lost a lot of blood. So. She rests. Helpless.

But. She can be helpless. For the first time in her life. And the first time in 20 years of memory.

She was on deaths door. And she was saved by a child. She has a new name. She has money. She has equipment. She can stop and learn.

May spends some of her time reading. Medical journals. Trying to get a feel for the new senses she has in her body. Find out where her powers come from.

And she spends the rest of her time remembering. Her head still feels like a storm. Sharp shards of memory she has been working to sliding them together in her mind.
