The Abyssal Rift is a world after the Calamity, one mostly forgotten by everyone except the ancient records in long abandoned ruins on the surface. All civilized societies exist underground in massive caverns that were discovered under the earth. These caverns held life for many different types of creatures, plants, fungi, and the like. Humanity fled to these caverns during the Calamity, formed colonies and communities to survive. They slowly settled in, and after a century of stagnation and degradation, they are finally ready to get back on their feet and reclaim their former life.

The Calamity swept humanity off the surface, so we dug deep.
By all accounts it began in the year 1934 while the Great Depression was in full swing, when something terrible happened. What exactly the happened is still mostly unknown, but it resulted in the surface of the earth being devastated. A last ditch effort pooled together resources between the few remaining communities to dig underneath the earth and build a new subterranean city. Instead, they dug too deep and discovered a massive series of caverns, ranging miles and crossing the entire earth underneath the ocean. In these caverns was the first city founded, Bastion, the last hope for humanity.
Dangerous forms of fauna and flora exist down here, with the only light coming from the distant flame of a human made fire, one of the few lava pits, or the many bioluminescent fungi that sprawl across the surface of the stone floors, walls, and ceilings. Since then, humanity has managed to advance further into the caverns and form new communities. They’ve sprawled about much like the fungi they rely upon for survival. Bastion itself is still the largest, and one of the few to now have actual factories and industry like the old world.
Harbingers, and by extension contractors, are rare, they’re only known by the religious leaders who help with their efforts. The supernatural is still uncommon, but most people know it as a real thing. Most supernatural individuals are recoiled from by most normal people, but aren’t often directly persecuted for it.
