Ria discovers a new ability

Ria feels the stares. Her senses have kept growing. Appa had been talking to command. Getting some medicine for her. It would make it easier for her to survive contracts.

But it didn't make this easier.

The kids around her in class watch her.

Curious, worried. Some scared. Too many are scared.

When she turns her eyes to them, they pretend they weren't paying attention.

Ria scowls.

She had always liked attention. Not like this. Not the escaped test subject. Not someone who didn't belong.

The bell rings.

Ria grabs her bag.

Her body has been growing, and she is much faster than other girls her age now. She could make it before there is a crowd, and

"Oh Ria, stay behind for a moment."

Oh no.

Ria watches Miss. Gramdel. She is nervous. Sad. A bit of embarrassment and shame.

Her heart drops further.

"Hey Ria....

So... me and the other teachers have been talking... and with your new...."

She searches for words. Ria can't stand it. What is happening? She focuses on her mind. Trying to get a deeper read.

"Well. With your new job, we were thinking that it doesn't make as much sense for you to be in the same classes as the other kids."

Gramdel is boring. She likes children, but doesn't respect them. Likes things orderly. Ria reaches out further.

Something clicks.

"So, we have been working with C&C to ..."

Gramdel stops. Notcing the light coming Ria's eyes.

"Ria, what are you do...."

Then Ria is in her mind.

It is too much. Flashed of a life. A divorce, funerals. Anger, pain. All impressing themselves into Ria's mind.

Too much.

And she isn't just feeling, she is touching.

Breaking.

She can feel her mind. It is already breaking.

Oh. OH NO. Stop! Please stop

She can't make it stop. But she can shape how it breaks.

uhhh... Maybe good things. Make her care about kids more. Respect them.

She shapes Miss. Gramdel's mind. Using the last of her energy before she falls back, exhausted.

"Ria are you alright? Do you need to go to the nurse?"

Ria shudders a bit, and dodges Miss. Gramdel's hands as she runs.

A Key?

“I have been obsessed with my dreams, as of late. The star-eyed man in the dream, many times repeated: an inkling of something beyond, I am sure of it.

My colleagues have remarked on my uncharacteristic shoddiness in my work. I explained to them that my focus was shifted to more important matters for a short while, though they did not seem to understand.

Yesterday I returned to my quarters and closed my eyes. I had seen the dream so many times; surely I could recreate it in my mind’s eye? The efforts were fruitless; one can only counterfeit false sights.

In a moment of inspiration, I tried summoning the dream, rather than merely imitating it. It worked! I saw it again: the man that is too beautiful, the stars that are too perfectly aligned. The pressure I have felt was lifted; what does it all mean?

I opened my eyes and noticed it was no longer yesterday, but rather today. Though it was time for my breakfast, I did not feel appetite: the very air one breathes always seems so inappropriate after these kinds of dreams.”

A Foray into the Void

“An asteroid floating in the immensity of the void is plucked from its peaceful existence by a group of fuel-hungry beings, and repurposed for their needs. An affront, is it not?

And yet, is it truly content with sailing aimlessly through the cosmos, until some other astral body collides with it and ends its solitude? After all, what is the difference if it was us or another rock that fragmented it? On the contrary, one should think the asteroid’s sacrifice would be a blessing to it, if it served a Greater Purpose. Indeed, an asteroid would be very fortunate to be drafted into becoming a part of such a journey, a lucky winner amongst millions, billions, quadrillions. We must make sure we are indeed headed for that Greater Purpose, or an asteroid has just been sacrificed in vain!

I have heard concerning things from one of my other team members, things that cannot be written down here. I must inquire into this matter later. I will protect this ship and its purpose, to the best of my frail abilities.

I can feel the pressure that has taken ahold of me weakening: it will be gone, soon. Though oddly, I find myself fearful of its departure: an unspoken threat, a clue. It has to do with the Vain Doctor: I cannot relieve myself of the feeling there is some foolishness still latching onto my mind, but I shall not falter. One riddle at a time; in the end they will all converge into the great mystery of our own Greater Purpose.”

Voice Recording 1: All trouble hurts less when there's ice cream on your chest!

Did my first Contract mission! I mostly just sort of walked around a police station where there was this one dead guy and then another dead guy. There was this little kid there though Ria, who's really smart and she's got something going on kinda like Alfred where she knows how people are feeling. I'm really glad it's not like his though because for him it makes him really upset a lot of the time so he's gotta stay away from people. Where was I? Oh yeah, so we were going around the station and Ria was asking these questions and Secret went on a side quest where they found out why the other police person got shot up. They both ended up doing most of the work on account of I can't read. Ria ended up having to do a lot of stuff and see a lot of bad things happen because of that so I feel bad about it. If I'd known how she wouldn't have had to see those dead people. I forgot how much that can mess up a person. I've seen a lot of dead people. I honestly don't really remember exactly all what happened with the case because I wasn't really there for a lot of what was going on and I couldn't understand the evidence. There was also Secret, who I thought was an android but isn't! They solved all the other half of the case by themselves. All I could really do was show em a cool ice cream place and pay for it. I thought maybe I could be helpful just from being muscle but it seems being buff alone doesn't mean you'll make it in this business. Maybe it doesn't matter that much though, still got paid by my benefactor by the end of the mission. I hope I can be more helpful on the next mission.

You might think the title was weird but I swear it makes sense. Like you know, you're enjoying some nice chilly ice cream and you're loving it so much it's just getting all over you, you know?

Anyway, Snow out. Thanks benefactor for making my ice cream dreams a reality <:

A Non-Existent Pressure Ails Me

“After careful consideration, I have deemed my mind capable of learning the lesson administered by my folly which I have recently suffered, and thus elected to purify myself of the wound it inflicted upon me. Though it seems Fate is far less lenient a schoolmaster, and two more sermons came from It.

My first admonishment came in the form of the Bioengineering Department’s response to my plea: the doctor most suited for such a procedure was none other than the Vain Doctor I met in that uneventful event, the Inspection. In that moment, I heard Fate’s cold voice in the written letter. Awaken, fool, It scolded. Your waking hours are wasted in a land of dreams.

I went, and the Vain Doctor healed me. He claims that he does not dream, but his powers have had a more lasting impression on me than his words. I feel it, in the back of my mind: If I speak of it too soon, my punishment will return. And yet what is there to speak of? Is it the face in the dream?

Perhaps. Yet for all the pieces I am missing, I cannot see plainly which one mustn’t be found.”

Resistance is Futile

I was summoned for a special mission that needed my expertise.  It seems command finally has noticed my genius.  However, they sent they most boring individual to recruit me.  He was so bland that I forgot his face.

I was instructed to head to a particular shuttle bay and meet with some others who would be joining me on this little errand.

There was Spark, there will be words about them later.  Lots of mean angry words.  Then there was Kaiza, our pilot to and from the location, and our command representative, Echless.  I couldn't have been blessed with a stupider or uglier lot.  Spark, for one, refused to let me beautify their face, dispute the ugly scar covering half of it.

The errand is to investigate a DECR, and in my department no less.  I hate tatel tails.

We arrive at the airlock, no thanks to Kaiza's excellent flying skills, though I don't see what was wrong with the interior ship transport.  We're greeted by the head scientist who's name and face were so unremarkable that I'm not even going to bother putting them in the report, and his obviously poorly put together genetically engineered body guard.

As we're questioning the residents of the lab, Spark, that nasty, no good, ugly, oppressive Enforcer pig decided to shoot my hand off!  I'll have to file a report with his superior officer and have him reprimanded for his actions!  That bastard deserves not a single ounce of mercy for shooting off my hand!

At any rate.  There was nothing wrong with the lab.

Everything is OK.

Time on the Gun range and talking to Apa.

"It feels really heavy" Ria complains a bit. She holds the pistol and looks down the range.

"It should It's a serious weapon."

Ria looks over at Spark.

Reaches out. They are focused, calm. Not malicious.

Ria breaths. Then aims down the scope.

"Breath in, then let out half way. Then hold."

Ria breathed in. Release. Hold. Fire.

She clipped the shoulder of the target. The gun hurt in her hand.

"Ouch."

"Yeah, that's recoil. You need to be braced for it. Here, let me show you a shooting stance, and how to hold your arms."

---------

Ria sits with Apa. Apa feels guilty. Worried. A lot of things really.

The house was full of new emotions to Ria's newly awakened sense.

"Apa. You took me... From the Biogenetics?"

Apa is sad.

"From a lab. It was hard. I thought I got away with it. I carved a hole where my stomach usually was. Then I gave you a drug to keep you quiet, and put you in. I did some ... other things to hide it."

Ria knew it was true. She always knew that she was... That she came into the family.... That she was different.

She had more questions ... But it was too much.

"How..."

Ria's voice breaks.

"... Did you know what I could do?"

Apa frowns.

"I suspected. I knew that you needed... different foods, nutrients for it to grow. So I kept that from you. Hoping it would stay under wraps. Until you were old enough to hide it... But it seems we were found."

Ria tears up. She stops being able to speaks.

Apa notices.

"Ria.. Alexandria, sweethearts, it's okay. I'm so sorry. I wish I could have protected you better. Know that I did this because I love you. I wanted you to have a full life."

Apa tears up as they take Ria in their arms. An action they have done many times in the 9 years since they stole her away and gave her a name and a family.

"Shhh. It's okay love. You're safe. You are my daughter, and we love you."

The Odysseus is the name of a generation ship that left Earth a long time ago. So long ago that it's not even a memory of a legend. All the general populace knows is they're on a trip to somewhere, but where? This is a high-tech, no magic(currently) setting. Welcomed themes include bio-punk, cyber punk, sci-fi, and horror.

Full Setting Description

The Odysseus is on a journey to a place simply known as "The Destination."  Earth is lost and no longer in living memory, or even remembered in legend anymore.  As far as any of the crew members know, the crew is all that's left of humanity.  The journey was going well until some time ago a rouge asteroid struck The Odysseus, taking out a large portion of the crew, and causing serious damage.  While the damage was repaired, it was done so at great cost of blood and material, and it was only a patch job.

This event caused a schism in the crew as quality of life dropped.  There was an attempted Mutiny, and the rebels were punished, their names stricken from the ship manifest.  Many of the rebels died.  Those in charge, Command & Control locked down, and isolated the departments to prevent such an event from happening again.  Overtime, each department developed their own cultures and a tribal mentality grew out of it.

Command & Control encouraged this since it made the crew easier to manipulate.  However, this isolation has allowed dark interests to run wild.  Genetically engineered horrors, rouge AI, fanatical beliefs have taken root, and now threaten the ship and the crew.
