Earth

A modern-day Earth threatened by unseen forces of darkness. To combat this, otherworldly Harbingers offer Contracts and Gifts to individuals that possess strong, fervent wishes -- better known as magical girls.

House Rules

Contractors from Heart's Desire Are NOT portable, and may NOT visit other Playgroups to participate in Contracts.
Heart's Desire grants 6 Experience points to GMs who achieve the Golden Ratio.
  • Citizenship: Active Players are expected to GM Contracts from time to time. If you have played as a Contractor in your most recent six Contracts, you are barred from playing in The Illumination again until you GM.
  • Supernatural Powers: All non-mastery, non-concealed Powers must be obviously supernatural when activated or grant a mutation that marks the wielder as supernatural or bizarre if discovered.
  • Gifted Contractors: All Contractors in this playgroup must select the Gifted asset at character creation. This Gift has to be Alternate Form, representing the Contractor's magical girl form. The Uniform and Focus enhancement and perk must be selected, but the final point can be allocated as the player wishes, and the flavor text should reflect that specific Contractor's magical girl form.
    • All Contractors in this playgroup share the same Focus item: their soul crystal. However, the equipment from Uniform may vary per Contractor.
  • Ambitions become Wishes: The typical "Ambition" of a Contractor is instead referred to as their "Wish." As every Contractor in this playgroup shares a magical girl Paradigm, Gifts are instead influenced by a Contractor's Wish. As a result, broad things that usually work for Ambitions such as "end homelessness" may not work well as Wishes -- but the reverse is true as well, and specific things that might not work as Ambitions would work well as Wishes.
    • Let's use my first Contractor this group, Ashley Brighton, as an example. Her Wish is to "bring back her deceased mother". It's highly likely she'd receive Gifts that relate to healing, life and vitality -- and she would most likely eventually receive a Raise Dead Power.
    • However, many magical girls are also based around a certain theme -- to use Ashley as an example, her magical girl form has a feline theme. In addition to her Wish, this theme could be used as inspiration for her Gifts -- she could just as easily manifest Gifts that are reminiscent of cats, including and definitely not limited to the ability to transform into one herself.
  • Color-Coded Paradigms: Everyone's a magical girl, but everyone has a subparadigm in the form of a color -- for example, "pink magical girl". A magical girl's color is influenced by their personality and beliefs. Additionally, the color must be present in their magical girl form in some way, though it doesn't have to be the main color (but it can be). Accent colors also work, as does hair color or highlights. It could also be as small as simply being the color of the magical girl's soul crystal. A list of officially recognized colors are as follows:
    • Pink: Pink magical girls are bright and full of optimism, with a natural-born tendency towards leadership (though that doesn't afford pink magical girls any special status within a Contract).
    • Blue: Blue magical girls exude an aura of elegance and wisdom and are often capable of providing a level-headed outlook on any situation.
    • Purple: Purple magical girls can come off as quite detached, due to their cool and aloof nature. They also have a tendency to be quite sophisticated individuals; fitting, as purple is the color of royalty.
    • Yellow: Yellow magical girls can often be described as "the sun embodied;" they're bubbly people who are always full of energy.
    • Green: Green magical girls are probably what you think of if you think of your ideal older sister. They also tend to be quite sporty, for whatever reason.
    • Red: Red magical girls often possess a great deal of maturity, even while still young themselves. They make excellent mentors for less experienced magical girls.
    • White: White magical girls are one of the rarest officially recognized colors, only outdone by black. They reflect the purity and innocence their color symbolizes, with gentle and soft hearts.
      • In the extremely rare case of a non-human magical girl, they're also likely to be a white magical girl.
    • Black: Black magical girls are the rarest officially recognized color as they are the antithesis of what is typically sought out in potential Contractors. They are reclusive, solitary, and abrasive; their Wishes tend to be far more self-centered than any other color.
      • Black magical girls tend to get a bad reputation. However, they are not evil, despite what stereotypes and stigma might say. They simply tend towards a more moral grey than other colors.
    • Other Colors: It's possible for other colors to manifest for magical girls, however, they are extremely rare. Please seek approval from a Leader or Judge before creating a Contractor that uses a paradigm color not on this list.

Full Setting Description

“What would you lose to gain your heart’s desire? To fulfill your greatest wish?”

Slowly, the Earth as we know it has changed, almost invisibly slow. From dark corners and sliver-sized cracks in reality creeps the Darkness, forces beyond the world we know and set on transforming it behind the veil of normalcy the average human lives behind. Harbingers, being looking to push back the forces of Darkness, take the forms of fae-like entities, cute animals, and living plushies to attract their targets, the Magical Girls.

Magical Girls, contracted by Harbingers to defend against these forces, act as the primary protectors of the people in exchange for the granting of their Wish, their most fervent desire, receiving their powers in the form of gems imbued with part of their soul. Normal girls with extraordinary secret identities, magical girls are public knowledge and in many ways internet celebrities, with videos of them and their efforts against Darkness gaining millions of views.

These Wishes, however, do not come without significant costs. The Darkness is not an easily bested foe, taking on a variety of forms, both physical and metaphorical, and creating unrelenting waves of minions to protect their main bodies, encroaching and corrupting the real world. No one knows if it can truly be killed or purified itself either, slinking away when defeated to recoup its strength and return stronger, faster, more knowledgeable. Though research has noted it seems to become particularly potent and powerful in spaces embroiled in strife or contention, proving a difficult challenge for magical girls, as using violence to defeat Darkness will simply breed more of it.
