Having fled from his fellow contractors after stealing the artifact that was the target of their mission, Conrad now resides in a cabin in the middle of the Black Forest of Germany. The artifact allows for the control of small animals so he wanted a forested area with some variety of creatures so that he could practice his control.
The cabin is a basically a well-fortified studio apartment, with a firewood stove and running water that works off rain collection. One wall is packed floor to ceiling with bookshelves so he can busy himself while he waits on things like his spiders weaving with silk or owls scouting his surroundings.
When his parents died, they were moderately wealthy and all that money went into a trust that he took control of when he was eighteen. He took that money and spent downtime over a couple years doing market research so he could turn it into more money. And also gambling. Counting cards isn't that hard when you can keep track of it all. Most of the money was just invested until he became a contractor; when it turned into safe houses, bogus identities, the occasional mercenary contract. He has made inquiries into taking control of abandoned properties in a number of countries but that hasn't born fruit yet.
