Mathias currently lives in Portland, Oregon with his mother, sister and daughter. Their house is a small 2 bed and 2 bath, with the sort of "classic cottagecore" vibes you would expect to find back at their old home in Ireland. The front lawn is slightly overgrown with wildflowers that thrive alongside his mother's garden that she dedicates many hours of every day to tending to (her granddaughter helps). The kitchen is small enough for one person to cook in there at a time, but is home to many pictures and decor they brought overseas that makes it feel more cozy rather than cramped. The bedrooms are split two and two, with his mother moving between them depending on Mathias's availability to help with his child.
The city was ranked high in safety ratings and the community was active and full of creativity, which was ideal for him to raise his daughter in. He hopes as she gets older she will be able to venture out and share her smiles and laughter with the rest of the world...after he makes it a better place for her.
Mathias currently works at Black Wolf Protection Group as hired security. He is trained with firearms, although he prefers a more "subtle" approach to his work. He has also run workshops to train others how to use firearms as well as self defense classes (his daughter and sister will often attend those to give encouragement and aid to anyone who might be having a hard time).
Besides the general day job, Mathias has some..."underground" connections, for dirtier work. He does work for the highest bidder; politicians who want to cause problems with competition, crime lords who need assistance with taking out an enemy, etc. These jobs are more sparse and require travel, but are higher paying, so he'll take one from time to time.
Mathias has seen death. Mathias has experienced loss. The world can be cruel and unforgiving, but there are moments of pure beauty and love. His daughter is the light of his life, a guiding star in a sea of darkness. His line of work shows him the ugliness that can radiate from the hearts of men, but when he comes home, the poison is washed away as soon as little Saoirse comes running over to greet him with a hug.
There is no limit Mathias wouldn't go to make the world a safer place for his little girl. He will wade through a sea of blood and snuff out every last damned soul with his bare hands so she can flourish, and he will taste death over and over again to accomplish this.
Mathias was born and raised in Cashel, Ireland. He joined his father and older brother (Ronan) when they moved to America for work, leaving his mother and baby sister behind. Their original plan was to stay in New York, work for a few years and eventually move back home. Obviously that wasn't the case; him and his brother struggled to keep up with their father, eventually leading to Ronan turning to riskier side jobs to make extra money. He planned on saving up and bailing to go back to Cashel, but crossed the wrong people and was found scattered in multiple cities. His father developed a debilitating alcohol problem, and Mathias used the rest of his brother's savings to send him back home to be with his mother.
Unfortunately for Mathias, he would fall into the same line of work not long after this.
Saoirse: Mathias's daughter. She is 4 years old, has the curliest ginger blonde hair, and beautiful sea-green eyes. Her face is dotted with freckles just like her dad. She has only seen her mother a few times in her life after her father gained custody, and although she doesn't understand what happened between them, she loves them both nonetheless.
Maeve: Maddy's mother who moved to the states after his father's passing. Her red hair has faded to gray and wrinkles decorate her aged face, adding to her grandmotherly charm. She tends to the gardens around the house and helps with cooking and cleaning, and will often knit or sew in her spare time. She likes spending time with her granddaughter and sharing stories of her home and her life while they do tasks together. She has faint ideas of what Mathias does for work, but actively chooses to avoid those topics.
Sloane: She is Mathias's baby sister, 36 years old and looks like a younger replica of their mother. She has a Master's degree in bio-engineering and psychology, and currently works at OHSU as a professor in their biomedical engineering program. She thinks Mathias is doing more harm than good and fears he will only hurt his family if he continues down his self destructive path.
Mathias originally grew up in a small town in Ireland with his parents, brother and younger sister. Family life was pretty standard, they were all close knit and he had a good friend group growing up. His school was on the smaller side, and a bit of a walk, but many of his friends lived on the way so he was never alone when traveling. Mathias was fairly popular with other students, although his brother got more attention for being older and very pretty. Not that Maddy minded, he much preferred to spend his time buried in his books or making small talk with his circle rather than being the center of attention.
Things began to change at home when his father lost his small business and made the decision to move to America for a bit to try making more money there. He took both of his sons, who were around 16 and 18 at the time, to find work overseas as well to further support their family. Things of course went very south, and eventually Mathias had his sister and mother move in with him several years after the deaths of his brother and father.
Mathias has been in love exactly twice. His first love was a girl from school back in Ireland- Bridget Birmingham, a fellow bookworm who won him over after reciting passages from their shared favorite book. She was his first for everything, and he was deeply heartbroken when he had to let her go before moving with his father. They kept in touch for a few years after through mail, but eventually the mail stopped coming and he was forced to move on.
His second love came much later in life. He had short relations with others before then, but they all came and went. Josephine was different, though. She had a fire alight inside that never seemed to burn out, always chose to stand out and make statements, and wasn't afraid to be bold and fierce. She was a musician who thrived in the spot light, and easily caught Mathias's attention at a local karaoke bar in California during a job. He bought her a drink after her performance and the two dated for a couple years before she became pregnant and sacrificed custody of their baby to pursue her dreams of fame. They never spoke again after that.
As a single father of a little girl, Mathias's greatest fear is a very obvious one. The world is a cruel and unjust place, especially towards young women, and he has fought the dark worries and thoughts off more than once since her birth. He knows he won't be around to protect her forever, that she will grow up and want to see the wonders of the world while her enemies stalk in the shadows, but at least he can use his powers to fight fire with fire. If he must become the necessary evil that brings down the other monsters of the world, so be it. However, to answer the question simply:
His worst fear is losing his little girl.
Whether this is to be taken literally or figuratively, he cannot answer (he probably won't clarify either). He cannot bear the thought of something happening to her, to discover one day that the child he has raised and loved and would kill for in a heartbeat was gone or changed forever is his worst nightmare. The world can rip him apart, burry him alive, and leave him as food for the worms and he will still find a way to crawl back home.
