Makbel is a wanderer, constantly on the move for the latest scoop. He probably lives more out of hotels/motels/airbnb's than his actual home, but he does have a small but well-stocked apartment nestled somewhere in New York City. He's most at home in the metropolis and chose New York due to its position close to many major media outlets and being just a central city overall for the US.
Perhaps partially due to Makbel not staying around too often, his apartment is quite neat. All his physical effects are carefully organized to be easily accessed whenever he has to leave in a hurry, and all his information is either digitized or, if it must stay physical, is carefully sealed in a well-organized manner. In terms of decorations, Makbel has some photos he has taken from his travels placed around to add a touch of life to the otherwise bland home.
Makbel earns some money as a freelance reporter/photographer but the main source of his income comes from carefully application of his knowledge of others' secrets. (Blackmail. It's blackmail.) He has the dirt on a number of politicians and celebrities, which he uses to have a steady income to provide for what he does.
He uses his wealth mainly for his constant traveling all over the world, supplies and expenses that come about from his "investigative work", and now in his contract runs. Makbel does splurge a little bit where, when he has a chance, he goes for higher quality flights, rooms, and food.
Makbel believes whole-heartedly that the world is an illusion and he wants to prove this fact. He is willing to go as far as it takes to do so--if the world is fake, the consequences of his actions too do not have any true impact. Everyone is a fictional character, so killing them won't matter. In the same vein, he himself doesn't care too much if he dies either in support of his cause as he is "fake" too. In a fictional world, death and life have no real meaning and can easily be changed. This limit applies to "lesser" limits as well, which is why he has no qualms against blackmail or other things.
When the world is a fictional reality, there are no limits because the limits can be rewritten and undone.
When you're someone who constantly searches for secrets, eventually you find secrets that kill to be kept. Makbel thought he was investigating a bout of infidelity for an engaged B-list actor. Instead, he found a cult that captured him and a friendly colleague, a number of months locked in captivity, a massacre that bent reality, and a newfound desparate belief that the world was a fictional reality. While trapped, he saw things unexplainable and people do things that could not make sense unless it were the workings of a story with some hidden intent. After all, there could be no other reason for such horrors to have happened... right?
