Dr Werner Benjamin hails from Germany although he spend his formative years studying in the US. He now lives in Paris, in a modest studio apartment granted to him by the University of Sorbonne as part of his contract to work there as a research fellow for the next year. He agreed to come to France because he was offered a very attractive offer from the University, one that would allow him to fund his independent projects and research. Besides that, he has already gone through most of the archives and antique bookshops in Germany, at least the ones that were worth his time, and has now set his eyes on the ones in France.
Dr Werner Benjamin has a standing contract with the university of Sorbonne, they pay him to do some scholarly work on some newly discovered notebooks and papers belonging to the famous mathematician and phenomenologist Edmund Hussrl. Dr Benjamin, being a native German speaker and an expert on modern philosophy, seemed like the ideal candidate. On top of that he sometimes lectures graduate students.
He doesn't really spend his money on anything other than the necessities and some good quality stationary materials. He mostly saves up so he can buy interesting occult tomes whenever he comes across them as well as fund his various research trips.
Since Werner was an undergraduate student of philosophy, a few questions have plagued his mind. What is reality? What does it mean to be? What is the line between objective reality and subjective reality? Naturally, for years, he followed the same old academic path, got his Msc, then his PdD etc... but deeper as he seemed to go into academia, the more disappointed he was by the lack of answers. Until, that is, his research led him to the occult. Fantastical beings, far wilder than the normal humans, vampires, merfolk and what have you, he learned about gods, primordial beings with the power to create and devour matter, unspeakable terrors lurking just behind the very corners of reality as we know it. He now wants to learn everything about them, he wants to understand life and death, he yearns for knowledge and power.
He is a man of character and empathy, but he will risk life and limb - his or otherwise - to achieve his goals.
