Chad lives in Massachusets, attending college near Essex County. He got in a prestigious university mostly due to his football career and, while the school is notorious for its occult activities and literature, he's aloof to most of this. He recently moved to Neo Avalon, New York, to find help for his sister.
In college, he gets his own dorm room. Its stocked with his trophies, jerseys, signed photos of famous quarterbacks and assorted memorabilia, as well as an old gaming console and a box filled with letters from his younger sister. A framed photo of her sits atop his nightstand.
In Neo Avalon, Chad rents a mostly empty studio apartment, yet he hasn't brought much of his stuff from college save from the letters. The apartment is located above a boxing gym where he attends every day.
While Chad still gets an allowance from his wealthy parents, most of that goes to rent. He makes his money as a coach part time, and part time as a fast food worker. He spends his money on occult material like books and scrolls (that don't help much, since he's basically illiterate) and boxing equipment.
His work as a coach is easy for him, as he's used to being looked up to. Plus, the gym is right below his apartment. He tends to get too cocky and most of his students never go back for a second round. Still, he has a few regulars who love his style.
At the fast food place, however, Chad is miserable. Having to listed to customers complaining and not being able to knock their socks off is extremely hard for somebody as simple-minded and egocentric as he is.
Chad's sister Lily was his pride and joy. She was more of a bookworm compared to him, yet nobody at school dared lay a finger on her or even think of bullying her, thanks to Chad's influence.
Lily was perfect in her brother's eyes, fun, cheerful and smart. She complemented him entirely and they were both huge fans of each other. Given that their parents were very absent in both of their lives, they only had each other most of the time. However, she also had an interest in the occult. She started partaking in Contracts at the age of 15, despite her brother's dismay, and she amassed significant power as a Contractor. Chad was hesitant to move away to college, but Lily insisted she'd write every week. Until she didn't.
Lily's last letter was a confusing jumble of words and characters that didn't make sense, delivered by a fiendish-looking creature. It took Chad months to decypher it (mostly due to his IQ) but, when he did, it revealed that Lily's last Contract had gone wrong: she was trapped in Hell. She wrote the cypher with the last of her strengths before being captured and sent a familiar to deliver it. The letter wasn't even a plea for help, it was goodbye to her big brother.
Chad, however, wouldn't let his sister go down so easily and started preparing himself for his first Contract. And, for his sister, he'd do anything.
