Xantari Pathos's Questionnaire

1. What town or city do you live in? Why do you live there instead of anywhere else? Describe your home.

I reside in Minetown, which is on level 2 of the dungeon. It is relatively well-guarded and fortified from monsters despite being right next to the gnome caves. I have a small house that they let me move into. I chose it because it had a crafting table. It is also further away from the lake, which causes me some annoyance because monsters just love to camp there and catch you unawares.

There are much better places to live in NEO-GENIS, but they don’t provide me with access to the dungeon where the amulet is. The dreams I have… they remind me that I must keep pursuing my quest to gain the amulet of Yendor. I’m nowhere close to the bottom levels of the dungeon, but one day…

2. How do you get your money right now? What do you spend it on?

I trade with the shops on my level of the dungeon with items and gold that I’ve looted off the floor. I do not know the mysteries of the dungeon, and I can only assume they are the finances of a past adventurer. Well, it’s useless to them now and mighty useful for me, so I don’t feel ashamed about lining my pockets. I am also a rogue by profession, and have been occasionally blessed with a wand of theft. The shopkeepers are higher in power than I am though, so I am hesitant to rob them lest I be beat to a bloody pulp.

I spend my money solely on gear to further my quest.

3. Describe your Ambition. What are you striving for? How far would you go to achieve this? Would you kill for it? How close to death would you come for it?

When I spend time away from the dungeons, I receive strange dreams detailing me descending the dungeons and searching for an amulet. In those dreams, a divine being tells me it is my birthright to find it and ascend to godhood. But in the very same phantasm, I perceive my many deaths at the hands of horrible monsters which I have not yet encountered.

Once I entered the dungeon, those dreams stopped, though I suppose they still exist by essence of having become my reality.

I am so far away from ascension. The monsters I fight are but rats and zombie kobolds, defeatable by any commoner. I seek to gain power so I can survive in the dungeons. No, not only survive, but thrive. I will become stronger than the monsters that dwell here. I must.

4. What was the most defining event of your life (before signing The Contract), and how did it change you?

My first combat with a denizen of the dungeon. It was a giant slug, a beast taking up the whole archway which I saw it come through. It was slow but unwieldy. This was to my advantage, as I easily outsped it and hacked at it with my daggers. My first kill. It was satisfying, though it left nothing of interest. I have since then fought many monsters, but you never forget your first. That feeling of adrenaline and accomplishment fuels my determination. It makes me think about how no fight should be fair if I can help it down here, as there is no glory of combat amongst the dungeons—Only survival.

5. Name and briefly describe three people in your life. One must be the person you are closest to.

My pet dog, Adebesi, is my closest companion bar none. He is a loyal mutt, perhaps literally, as I am unsure what breed of dog he is. He accompanies me in the dungeons, and has saved my life on many an occasion. However, I cannot let him go further down than Minetown. It is too dangerous for him there. But he is still a relaxing presence to come home to.

Next, I would consider the Minetown general store shopkeep to be a welcome presence. He is well-stocked with essentials and knows me as a frequent customer. We do not make much small talk, but he respects the work of all dungeoneers and in turn, I respect him.

Lastly, I must direct my anger at those damned waterseekers and earthseekers, jokes of mercenaries. The bastards camp around the dungeon and wait to prey on weakened adventurers, stealing their shit when they inevitably die. Once I am stronger, I will begin killing them on sight.

6. How was your childhood? Who were your parents? What were they like? Did you attend school? If so, did you fit in? If not, why not?

I was an orphan hailing from the city of Chiron, a fortified city that was safe from the monsters that roamed the land. We had an army and a booming business of adventurers, so compared to some other countries, we were well defended. This safety from outer threats didn’t make my childhood much easier, though. I had to fend for myself on the streets, and it was a miracle that I found willing mentors to teach me to read and write. Not only that, but I picked up the basics of spellcasting. My time on the streets did give me great skills in stealth and subterfuge, useful for sneaking and lockpicking in the dungeons. I do not recall much of my childhood, but I am grateful that I never fell in line with the underworld of Chiron. I’ve heard too many whispered rumors in taverns of what they do to each other to feel comfortable seeking their tutelage.

7. Have you ever been in love? With who? What happened? If not, why not?

I am quite beholden to human emotions, but my quest for the amulet of Yendor holds precedence over any of my wants. Nary a being has truly caught my eye. Merely the occasional fancy that piques my interest. And it is not difficult for me to sate my desires when it does come up.

There are leches I have seen around that have turned me off from seeking a partnership or worse, marriage. I think even if I met someone who I admired deeply, I would not want to tie myself down in such a way.

Besides, my goal is to ascend! And when I have done so, there is no mortal partner who can be bethroed to me.
