“I live in Salt Lake City. I know, I know, it’s got a lot of Mormons, but it’s also got the headquarters of NutriCorp. ‘The world’s best agricultural and farming corporation!’ or so they say.
I’m an agricultural and land use planner for ‘em, so frankly I’m alright with the Mormons—they pay well and they keep outta my personal life.
I never woulda been able to keep up my classic arcade collecting without this rock solid job.
Plus, my hab-block has a great view of the city from the 49th floor, and the Salt Lake is pretty beautiful at night.
All things considered, Salt Lake City’s not a bad place to be. Especially compared to the Midwest right now.”
“I get my money from my work as a NutriCorp Agricultural planner. It’s a lot of desk work. And looking through old archive maps for land governance laws, but it pays well enough. Gets me a sizable hab block with a good city view, and dental benefits.
Plus when I’m not at the office, I’ve got all the time I want to build my arcade collection. A shame most of the cabinet sellers do their business virtually these days—not as many flea markets around as when I was growing up. But hey, since I’ve gotta poke around in Neo Gen anyways, it might not be the worst circumstance. I’ve heard there are markets in there where you can trade for all kinds of vintage Cabinets—I might even be able to pick up a Tron for the collection!”
“I just wanna find out what happened to Henry. My brother got hit with a coma after playing in that new NeoGen system and…I’ve gotta find out what happened.
Find a way for him to wake up, if possible.
I love my older brother and, he didn’t deserve this. Right now’s he’s sleeping in a hospital bed and I’m worried for him.
I don’t think I would kill but if it was some corporate bastard that did this to him, if somebody tried to kill my brother well…maybe. Maybe. Even then, I should still probably just lock them up.
If I had to risk death to save my brother well…that’s what I’m doing now, right? I’m suiting up for the same damn game that sent him into a coma.
I just hope I’m able to save him, instead of join him”
“Probably laying my eyes on my first copy of Pole Position, back when I was a kid. Playing that cabinet was like magic. I’d been born too late for the age of cars—most people did things digitally. But playing that cabinet made me feel like I too could be a race car driver.
That golden feeling never left me. I love the classics. Even though I’m no race car driver in my day to day, even though I’m just an agricultural planner. I collect the cabinets from the old days.
Every one I can get my hands on.
Pac Man, Frogger, Robotron 2084.
They’re all very dear to me.
Especially now that I don’t have my brother to talk to. They’re all I have right now. But maybe, if I delve into NeoGen, I can get him back.”
“My boss Bill Hughes is a good guy. He’s religious, so you won’t get much of his time on Sundays, but he’s respectful. Doesn’t love tech, as he’s a bit older—still remembers the days when the highways were bustling. But it makes him good at his work—he’s better at finding archives than anybody. As far as bosses go, I couldn’t ask for much more.
My mother, Rachel, was a great mom to me and Henry. Worked her ass off to raise us boys, especially as a single mother. She took me to those retro arcades when I was growing up, and I don’t think I’d have ever found something worth doing if it wasn’t for her guidance. She’s passed now—ovarian cancer. Real bitch of a disease. I…that’s all I have to say there. I miss her.
Henry, my older brother, is a pro esports player and a great guy. He loved NeoGen. Sunk his whole career into competing at the highest levels in games within that game. But with the coma…that lifestyle seems to have gotten him hurt bad. After Mom passed, he was the only family I had left. A great mentor, and friend. And now I can’t even talk to him. I’ve gotta figure out what happened to him.
