Some shithole in a random town. Population almost only farmers, mad elderly couples and herds of deer. You can't really leave, you wouldn't want to let down your family. And where would you go? You hardly have formal education. It wouldn't be so bad if profits were sound, but they are not. Something walks around the woods nearby, I can hear it at night and yet no one talks about it. Everyone else knows, it picks off sheep and ruins crops. They say its just the usual countryside species, foxes most commonly, but I don't know. Do foxes leave claw marks across the whole sheep's flank? Do they rip off rams heads in a clean bite? All I know is to never mention it. Perhaps it's no mystery why farming luck is so poor there, and that generational wealth extends to a tractor at most.
I wish we had more money, we used to do better, before the loss of livestock. The barn, not much older than some of the trees on the property, has panels hanging off.The fences attached by rusty nails. We earn an average salary, but it always feels like it has to be spent on whatever breaks that week. People pay rent and spend the rest how they like. Leaks? Landlord issue or developer. Here we have no one else to blame or fix issues. My family do the selling, I mostly work on the crops. They tend to manage the money over me, but of course I have a say.
