Tarhos Kovacs was a young boy when his village was raided during the holy crusades and he was taken as a slave. He started as a simple labor slave but he was caught waving a stick he found around like it was a sword by one of the top generals in the pope's inexhaustible army. After punishing Tarhos this general chose to teach him to fight, after all, the crusade could always use another sword. Tarhos showed a natural talent for combat and battle as a whole and he was even able to earn his "freedom" and was no longer considered a slave(at least not openly). He quickly rose through the ranks and eventually replaced his mentor as a general after watching him fall in battle.
Upon becoming a general he was assigned the very task his mentor was given, "Find the Holy Grail at any cost". Tarhos did not care for the pope or whatever made up deity he chose to wage this war for, so he feigned ignorance and "followed orders". He tore his way through Eurasia searching for this possibly made up artifact and yet he still could not find it. He heard rumors of a far off land inhabited by savages and figuring that's the only place he hadn't searched he crossed the sea in the hopes of finding more worthy opponents, and if he was lucky the secret to eternal life.
When he made landfall in what is now America, he massacred anyone he found that wasn't part of his small army. After a month of battle, Tarhos eventually found a cave that seemed to match the information he had tortured out of the inhabitants of this land, it didn't matter that they didn't speak English, they still told him. He entered the dark mouth of this wound in the earth with the few tired men he had left. After what felt like an eternity of walking ever deeper he came into a chamber that came straight from the legends and in the center there it was, the "Holy Grail". Tarhos acted immediately, slaughtering his men without a second thought, they were weak anyways and Tarhos had no need for weakness. He approached the grail suddenly noticing how dry his mouth was. This wouldn't be a problem for much longer, he took the grail and without hesitation drank it. This was Tarhos' greatest mistake, his throat and belly felt as though they were filled with tar and set on fire, then the pain spread quickly into his veins, permeating his body with agony. He was dying...."NO, NOT LIKE THIS" his brain was shutting down but he kept repeating this to himself until he faded into oblivion.
As he slept the Natives of this land caused a collapse of the mouth of the cave to seal this demon that tore their land asunder. He woke up with an infernal scream of rage as though he was being born again, but from a womb of white hot hatred. He didn't even remember where he was for the first few moments but the memories came flooding back as his brain turned itself back on. He could barely see an inch from his face but he managed to feel around for a torch that wasn't soaked in the blood of his former comrades. Upon igniting it, he was met with the gut churning realization that he was trapped. Countless boulders blocked his only way out and it dawned on him that while he may have gotten what he wanted, he'd likely starve down here. But strangely after what could've been two days or two weeks, he noticed he still wasn't hungry, or thirsty as a matter of fact. Maybe the grail was the real deal, maybe he wasn't going to die. His relief was quickly overshadowed by the realization that he'd be trapped down here forever, if he wasn't going to die, he'd have to live out every single agonizing second in this dark cold hole in the ground. This broke his mind for the first 100 years but an eternity will give you a lot of time to gather your wits.
He decided around the 103 year mark to do more than wallow in his misery and lose his mind. He practiced his swordsmanship, he meditated like his mentor had taught him, and he worked out despite the fact that his body didn't deteriorate from the moment he drank from the grail. This went on for about 600 years until finally, he heard something other than his own breathing and the dripping of water. He heard a strange clanking noise, it was faint but as the days passed, it grew louder and louder until finally he could make out light, he waited in a dark corner by the entrance to the chamber for someone to walk in. And when they did he realized they were wearing clothing he did not recognize and were speaking in a strange fashion, he slowly walked out of the dark corner he hid in and held his hands up to indicate he meant no harm and asked as clearly as his parched throat could "What year is it?" The man that entered fell back and looked very visibly disturbed as he backed away pitifully, this struck a nerve within Tarhos "Surely someone so weak does not deserve to live" but he swallowed the urge to snap the mans neck and asked again "What year is it?" The man seemed to quickly gain his composure and answered in a strange accent "You scared the hell out of me friend, you asked what year it is?" Tarhos nodded at him "It's the year 2023" Tarhos was stunned to find that he was down here for over 700 years.
The man seemed to finally notice Tarhos' armor and furrowed his brow in what seemed to be confusion. "Are you alone?" asked Tarhos, "I am, the university wouldn't approve this di-" Tarhos acted swiftly and pierced the man's chest with his claymore and spun his head almost 180 degrees in one quick movement. He left the man's body behind and climbed his way out of what he thought would be his tomb into a world he is completely unfamiliar with.
