Having served as a Priest in a large town in Nottinghamshire, England, Thistles was originally happy. Till one day he suddenly became disillusioned after a number of thugs vandalised the church he was placed in. Not disillusioned with God, but with where he was putting his service. Packing up quite quickly and resigning from his post, Thistles made travel towards America with very little on his back bar his crucifix and enough money pooled up from what was left of his previous job.
During this period of time, Thistles grew more desperate for money. Holy philanthropy doesn't get you in any high places, so Thistles started to work for rich clients needing exorcisms. Accruing a small collection of holy water during this profession, some members of The Vatican began to take notice of the "Rogue Exorcist" due to such a success rate. They began to dig into his jobs more thoroughly and discovered that those possessed by demons often admitted to faking such a condition rather than being seemingly cured and they demanded Thistles answer to The Vatican and write reports.
An order he refused.
While not being a charlatan on purpose, none of his solved exorcism were through holy actions. The crucifix, passes down through his Church, held a latent energy. Thistles believes it was Father Dunstan's crucifix, the Father who was killed during Henry VIII's purge of Catholic monks and Priests who would not swear an oath to join his new Church of England. Because of this, Dunstan forced his will power and fervour onto this old relic, imbuing it for years and years to come. With this crucifix, Thistles used it to put the patients to the test, throwing them around rooms till they came clean and confessed their lies to him.
Having never encountered anything supernatural besides his cross, he was hesitant to answer to The Vatican. Deciding to work for himself rather than risk the chance of a witch hunt growing and ruining his life.
