In an effort to conquer Death to bring back his wife, a scientist abandons civilization to study how to create a homunculus, only taking his infant son and wife last gift to him; her cat Acro. After years of experimenting and failing, the scientist becomes enveloped in his work and stops caring for his, which quickly leads to the young boys death as well. As the scientist mourns both of his lost family, a dark idea starts to form in his head. Using the notion of "cats having nine lives", the now mentally deranged scientist attempts to fuse the cat and boy together to bring him back and after making a sacrificial pact with a demon, the homunculus actually seems to be stable. Before the scientist can revel at his accomplishment, the demon comes for his reward and takes the scientist soul, killing him instantly. The pod that keeps the homunculus remains undisturbed in the forest for many years before the computer that powered the machine eventually croaks, freeing the boy-cat fusion from its cryogenic slumber. The now 12 year old hybrid learned to survive like a wild animal for almost a year before one day suddenly being approached by a mysterious woman wearing all orange. The Harbinger known as Misty was tasked with bringing the boy in as such an atrocity could not remain in the mortal plain but she took a liking to the boy and ended up raising him as her own. She gave him the name "Ren" as a reminder of her first contractor and "Schrodinger" because of his cat like features. Ren grew up quickly, learning common language and treating the Harbinger as his own parent, even after becoming an adult. Eventually seeking answers to his origin and wanting more out of his life than a makeshift monster, he turns to Misty, asking her to make him a Contractor.
