Raine laughed along to the festivities of her family and the family of her fiancée. The party was a fun one, a precursor to the one that would be on their long-awaited wedding, but she could feel the weight of the several glasses of champagne both in her bones and on her eyelids. She kissed her love on the cheek, bade farewell to all the others, stumbled her way into their room and under the covers, and soon she was claimed by dreamless sleep. Never had she imagined, though, that after such a cheerful event she would wake up to a nightmare made manifest.
Their families, slaughtered. Her love, gutted like a pig. Dozens of police officers milled about the gruesome scene while two of their number had Raine tackled and cuffed with prejudice, thrown into a car and then a cell.
Overnight, what was once a happy life had been irrevocably torn asunder. Raine flew into a rage when the judged declared her guilty. Six month behind bars amongst the worst people imaginable blurred past before she was released and her sentence was overturned - 'not enough evidence'. But even then, what was it all for? There was nobody left waiting for her outside of that pit of misery. Time was unable to heal the gaping wound in her heart. If anything, it just made it worse. Raine desperately wanted it all to end; she needed to drown it all out, for once and for all.
But, exactly one year after that cursed day, before she inched forward from her improvised seat at the edge of a rusty bridge, a being appeared standing behind her. A Harbinger, wearing Elle's skin. They showed her a way she could make them all suffer like she did. And Raine... though still grieving, she grabbed onto the idea with both hands. She might've been powerless before, but now she had a way to fix that.
