Rubin McNeil's Questionnaire

1. What town or city do you live in? Why do you live there instead of anywhere else? Describe your home.

Rubin lives in Flatland, not quite the Edwin Abbott Abbott Flatland, as they aren’t all geometrical shapes, but something similar.

The world is two-dimensional, and if an outsider were to ever see it, they’d have a very hard time differentiating anything at all. Who knows how the citizens would even take to seeing such a person? Would they themselves be able to comprehend it, who knows.

The mere concept of someone mentioning anything three-dimensional is a great cause for concern, it isn’t exactly illegal, since no one (except for Rubin now) has even really acknowledged such a thing. But, well, it makes you seem rather insane, speaking of things never heard of.

Rubin himself lives alone, in a fairly average apartment. It’s nothing special, but it isn’t the worst either.

2. How do you get your money right now? What do you spend it on?

Rubin works in an office, nothing special. He does paperwork day in and day out, it’s tiring but he can’t find anything near him much better that he’s also qualified for. Regardless of this, he’s learnt to cope just fine with his mediocre life, he doesn’t particularly yearn for much more anyway.

As for what he spends his money on, after the bills and necessities he must buy, he puts a good amount into his savings, just incase. You never know. And finally, with the remainder he gets the occasional treat, or something he wants for himself. Though, lately he’s been having to buy medication that’ll help to ‘fix’ his ailments.

3. Describe your Ambition. What are you striving for? How far would you go to achieve this? Would you kill for it? How close to death would you come for it?

Rubin isn’t very ambitious, at least not yet. He may be eventually, when he realises just what he needs to do in life…but he hasn’t really found that just yet.

He takes part in the weavers jobs because, well, it passes the time, and he’s the only one in his dimension ever to see such strange and unspeakable things. He’s the type to finish tasks but not exactly go above and beyond on them; whether this be for work, for fun or in any other of his endeavours.

Would he kill? Well, he has now. On a job, he killed a man, out of self defence for him and his companions however. He didn’t feel much about it in either direction, staying his usual neutral self.

Would he come close to death for a hypothetical ambition?

He hasn’t exactly had the chance to yet, so it’s still up in the air.

4. What was the most defining event of your life (before signing The Contract), and how did it change you?

Perhaps it was moving out on his own? Getting his stable job? Finishing his education? It could be one of many many menial achievements. Most defining event of his life? Nothing.

He lives an average life, in an average town, with an average job and average people. By all accounts, in his home dimension he’s average..almost negatively so, he’s never been good at anything in particular, or had any interesting connections. He’s just average.

His life has been shaped by this fact, however, continuing every day to do the same things, hardly ever changing a thing. It would be a lie to say he’s content, but also a lie to state the opposite. He’s done it for so long, just living life in the most normal way possible is the norm for him.

5. Name and briefly describe three people in your life. One must be the person you are closest to.

Rubin is…lonely. Perhaps the only thing he often feels sorry for himself over. He has his coworkers, who interact with him, but he hardly sees them outside of his job.

He had a few friends, one or two, from his previous education. But they drifted apart, and are probably onto better things now.

He had his family, for a short while, but there’s not really anyone closeby left alive for him to see often. He doesn’t lament over this, it’s been a long time now.

So, the person he’s probably the closest too would simply be himself. He doesn’t go out of his way to connect to anyone else at all, even if very occasionally he wishes he would. He tried speedating briefly, and that’s about as close as he got to putting himself out there.. it went about as well as you’d expect. Dry conversations all around until he called it a day.

6. How was your childhood? Who were your parents? What were they like? Did you attend school? If so, did you fit in? If not, why not?

His childhood was fine, good, average. Nothing particularly bad befell him, at least not anything huge until he was an adult. He lived with his mother and father who wanted him, who cared for him, his mother more so. He attended school, and received a mix of grades, he wasn’t outstanding, but he was fine. He didn’t fit in ‘fit in’ but he didn’t stick out too much. He was the kind of child to blend into the sidelines, not by choice but he didn’t complain about it.

He made friends, a few, and tried out various clubs whilst he was learning. His childhood was just as average as the rest of his life has been up until now.

He likes to think he was a particularly cute kid, however. He probably isn’t too far off, at least to the other citizens of Flatland, he was pretty cute, to the average person..hm, well maybe if they like picasso paintings?

7. Have you ever been in love? With who? What happened? If not, why not?

He tried speeddating! He tried apps! He tried going out to meet people! But it seems poor Rubin isn’t going to find love anytime soon, he semi gave up quite some time ago, thinking if he’ll ever find someone they’ll ‘Come along eventually’ and if not, they won’t.

He hasn’t ever really been in love either, maybe it’s because no one particularly got to know him, or maybe no one piqued his own interest, or vice versa. Regardless of what the ultimate reasoning is, maybe eventually he’ll find someone? Maybe not. Time will tell at this point, probably.

He does hold a love for a specific style of shirt though.
