Joseph was raised in an average midwestern town. They weren't heavy practitioners of Catholicism but he always took a liking to it. He always attended Sunday mass, always took Father Gabriel's words to heart and always live his life under the teaching of God.
With permission from his family and Father Gabriel, he began to shadow the father from age 17 with intentions of eventually becoming a priest. Father Gabriel was an old man, around 50 when Joseph began to shadow him, but he always was unusually spry for his age. The father taught Joseph about theology, introduced him to members of the local churches, and even accompanies his family on the gun range a few times having, always claiming to be secular priest and shrugging off the concerned glances at a priest with a gun.
By the time Joseph was 18, Father Gabriel and his church put forward Joseph as a candidate for the local seminarian, and was accepted. Spending 4 years studying, and a little under a year as a deacon, Joseph was ordained as a full Roman Catholic Priest by age 23. The affair was a strange one, it was done far from his home, in a town that seem borderline abandoned in a church grand enough that he was surprised he never heard of it.
The only attendants that were present were Father Gabriel, a Bishop who seemed too old for this world and half a dozen other priests that Joseph had never seen before. He does not remember much from the ordeal, but the ending is one he will never forget. Upon rising from the floor, he looked around, and he saw everything. He saw the walls of the church, and the people within, but he saw more. He saw the trees outside and not just through the window. He saw the grass sway outside, he saw mice crawl through the abandoned back rooms, he saw birds perched in the dusted bell tower.
Father Gabriel had quickly explained what had happened. He had been ordained, but in a manner far more rare the not. He had been blessed by the one true God to see all that was his within creation. And as such, it was his duty as priest to act as Gods eyes. To see what mortals could not. Father Gabriel explained that this was an induction of a true believer, and not just into the priesthood. But into the Entity, the Holy alliance.
The Entity, as explained by Gabriel, was a secret sect within the Catholic Church that operated directly under the order of the Holy See. They were to act as his eyes and ears. Act as hands in the dark that would fight demons in the shadows. A silent inquisition, a unknown crusade against the heretics and sinners.
Gabriel would act handler to Joseph in his missions for God.
And Joseph was more then eager.
